Independence Day 2014

This year the 4th of July was so much fun!
I realized afterward....
I didn't get good pictures- I think because I was having fun with the kids? At least that's my excuse.

Let's just start off by saying...
it was HOT.
so hot
The hottest day of the year so far- of course. I mean it was the 4th of July!?
On the 3rd- we met up for our traditional picnic & concert at the park, then fireworks.
The last two years it's been so hot we have opted to stay home to eat in the backyard since we have so many darling kiddos around now. In fact- this was the first year in 7 full years- that all of our kids were home for the 4th. We also had Brittany, Aimee & Sean & their kids, & Wende, Allie & Ethan. What fun!

One of my favorite things from being a kid was lighting these "snakes."
I put together bags for all of the kids full of bubbles & candy & pop its, etc-
plus got them each a box of snakes.
Jack & Sean helped us light them off & they loved them!

We had lots of snakes-
It was so fun to see the kids excitement as the lit & grew-

Finn & Crew were too little to appreciate the snakes- but they have discovered watermelon.
Finn here was covered in it & they needed a bath.

We headed to the park to listen to the concert & watch fireworks.
Megan snagged this great parking spot!
It was perfect because it was between two cars - the park was packed- so it was kind of a natural holding place for the kids, we all had a great view for the fireworks and didn't have to worry so much about anyone running off.

For most of these kiddos - it was their first year staying up late enough to see the fireworks!
Big Time Excitement

It was hot & humid -
so Brett (being a genius) went home, pulled a box of otter pops out of the freezer & brought them over.
I don't think an otter pop ever tasted so good?

The next morning we were up bright & early enough to sweat it out at our small town parade.

The next morning we were up bright & early enough to sweat it out at our small town parade.

The kids were loving the candy being thrown out- especially Lola.
But Joey- he wouldn't have any part of the salt water taffy- he is way too smart for that.
He was totally snubbing it. Someone came through handing out chocolates & he lit right up.
Loved the chocolate- didn't want the taffy. Ha- he just cracks me up!

Joey saw spider man & was thrilled.
Brett ran him over & he got to hug him- but I didn't get my camera out in time!

Poor Peter was sleeping away until a piece of taffy hit him smack in the head-

Of course he's an absolute doll & handled it just fine.

Finn wanted to be in the parade--

(crew left- finn right)

Besides all being together, my favorite part of the parade this year was watching Lola get excited about the candy & Cole hugging all the characters who walked by. It was the. cutest. thing. ever.

We came home & cooled off in the kiddie pool.

It is so great to watch my Charlie growing up-
he is so big now. I just can't believe how fast he is growing. He is going to be 5 this fall.
He is such a great kid- Megan & Tony are wonderful parents, which makes it a pleasure to be a grandparent.

These two monkeys have pretty cool parents too-

We spent the day recovering from the heat & eating leftovers from the night before. As it got dark it was strange that just Brett, Trent & I were home alone.

It was a good opportunity for us to let Trent be in charge of the fireworks that we had bought. It was also a lesson in patience.... Trent would light a match while standing up, then slowly bend down to light a firework. The match would go out- then he would start again. Brett kept trying to teach him how to do it - it was almost funny. It took about 10 matches per firework.
Thankfully we had nothing going on so it was a great learning/practice time.
Not having his older brothers there gave him the chance to be in charge.
Plus the neighborhood was shooting off fireworks all around us.
Speaking of getting big & older...
Trent turns 15 next month!
ah- it's a great life

a year of-- lasts

Wednesday was Trent's last parent teacher conference!
Of course, there are parent teacher conferences in Jr. & Sr. high-- but it's not the same- at all.
Trent was SO EXCITED! He woke up in the morning & announced- "It's my last SEP (student education plan) - so I am wearing a tie!" Okay then
I didn't think much of it, but when he came home from school- he went straight up & put on his dress clothes.

The computer lab is right across the hall from his classroom and we were there early, so he showed me how to log on & his passwords. He said several times- I love this school. So sweet. He is such a nice kid.

Trent with his teacher- she's the best. Really she is!

Trent with his-- how do you say this? extra needs teacher.

She really is amazing.  She has been working with Trent since the 2nd grade. She has been a life changer. I truly mean that- his advocate & fan.

I love this school too.
dang it
why does everyone have to grow up?

one of my favorite spots

Today after work & before getting dinner started I was looking through the photos in my phone & found this one.

What's so interesting...
is that - at that very moment- I was sitting in this exact spot & wearing the same black socks & jeans.
The only difference? The fireplace was on today.
I love this spot in my house, especially with the fireplace on.
It's so comfy & it's where I like to play Words With Friends.
Words With Friends- a game on my IPhone-
(my beloved IPhone- sigh)
Words with Friends is SO FUN- It's good for mental health too!
It gets you thinking & spelling, with friends. It's kind of like scrabble. It's the game Alec Baldwin was kicked off of an airplane for- because he wouldn't stop playing it on his IPad.
Ha- ya, I suppose it's addictive?
I've been thinking a lot-
thinking that retail at Christmas time & the week after is hard work. So hard that I'm frankly sick of it & relieved today was a good day at the store. Good as in- not so many returns or crabby people. Thinking that I'm glad I didn't "announce" my word for last year & I don't think I will this year either? Thinking that I'm worried we haven't had any snow or really even very much winter like weather.... Will it be snowing when Jack gets home? It snowed 4" the day he left (April 6 2010). What will happen to our garden? Will it snow in June & July again?! (For real-- people were still skiing on the 4th of July last year!) That is not NOT good for gardening. Let's face it farmer + bad weather = no food- tomatoes, peaches.... It's just one of those things that bugs/worries me.
Thinking that I should exercise more. Ya just thinking & NOT doing.
Thinking/worrying about Hailey being sick. She is struggling with her fibromyalgia -- it's just so hard to watch this. I wish there was more I could do. Is this better than seizures-- yes, but still- not good for a teenager. Such a bummer. Such a worry.
We are trying to decide what to do about Trent... for Jr. High next year. I love our neighborhood school, but the doctor has recommended a couple other options. I can't stand the thought of him in Jr. High. 7 different classes & Trent in a crowded hall of students several times a day. Oh boy. Worried. Really I'm so worried.
All this thinking/worrying has me kind of stressed out.
How about you- you thinking a lot lately?
Whatcha thinkin' bout'?

christmas break times two edition

Over Christmas break we have been so blessed!
We were invited to eat dinner with our friends the Johnsons not once... BUT TWICE.
Okay, the second time we kind of invited ourselves?
It was awesome!!

Besides having excellent taste (Karen & I love the same kinds of food) the company can't be beat. Just look at these lovely gals. Somehow Larkin escaped the photo?

Lily & Hailey

Hailey & Lily
two cuties- both so funny

They like to take funny pictures of themselves & put them on facebook.
It just cracks me up.

Caroline & Chloe- best friends since kindergarten.
Really I couldn't ask for a better friend for Chloe.
I love you Lily & Caroline.
I really do!
I love your whole family- we all do!
Your just so darn easy to love.

Besides eating with the Johnson's twice-- we also ate here twice.

It's true that I haven't quite figured out all of my new year's goals. I do have a couple.
#1 goal of 2012- no more crappy cheap cheeseburgers for me!
If I want a burger- this is the place.
Tony Burgers
Rated the #1 new place to eat in Utah & the best shake in the state!
I tell you what...

This place makes all other burger places look like junk. Even In & Out Burger.

It's amazing--- AMAZING I teLL YOU.
mmmmm
What makes them so good?
The meat is fresh, a combo of beef that has such great flavor. Hamburger meat that has flavor? Ya- I had no idea either? Also- the fries... oh mama.. they double fry them. Ketchup, fry sauce & Hickory fry sauce. Need I say more?

{ Tonyburger's signature Strawberry Coconut shake}

The Johnson's & Tony Burgers
what do they have in common?
Two things we need a lot more of in 2012.

upside down ice cream & a new favorite

I have changed- I have turned a corner. I have become a new person when it comes to

ice cream

I have been making a 2 qt. batch 2-3 times a week since July now. And... there is no end in sight. My whole life I have been lactose intolerant. Now-- not so bad, I just have to watch my portions. I can't help but wonder what really caused the problems.... the dairy or all the chemicals in the ice cream that's been making me miserable? Do you know how many crappy chemicals are in ice cream? Honestly I just quit eating it or only ate it a little bit at a time. Until now. {blogger- why won't you let me turn this photo?}

This is one of my favorite stand by quick recipes but there are others!
My partner in ice cream making

Working away

It's really wholesome & pure & beautiful.

Just milk, cream, sugar & vanilla - oh & a little vanilla bean powder for specks. Oh Yes the specks of vanilla bean- I LOVE them.

My favorite ice cream & ice book- you can find it here!

Thanks to Megan sending me a link: my new favorite main dish OH MY GOSH I've made these twice in the last week!

tuesday ramblings...

Last week I attended the first of a sweet line of bridal showers for Laura.Check out the food! Her neighborhood & church congregation put on this shower & it was delightful.
Brian was pretty thrilled about the griddle. But seriously, isn't she the cutest thing ever?!

Last week this picture was in my inbox along with the heel clicking photo. I love it. Missionary Jack eating a fresh mango. He says the fruit is amazing & he is loving it. It's still super hot there (nearly 100 degrees with nearly 100% humidity- aaargh!) so he was over the top excited to see temple square covered in snow during General Conference. When he tells people there how cold it is in Utah they are stunned. They always ask him- "How do you survive it?" Hey- I'm wondering the same thing.

On my way to the U of U last week for Hailey's doctor's appointment (she hasn't had a seizure in nearly 3 months!!!) we saw all of these daffodils by the Salt Lake library. She kindly got this picture for me- I always want to take pictures of things while I'm driving- but ya- I don't want to die. There are several places in the city with hundreds of daffodils. It does my heart good. I love daffodils- LOVE them. They are for sure my favorite flowers. They are strong- they can stand up through rough, changing weather. They are bright & cheery & bring hope.

Hope that spring is coming. Hope that life goes on after a hard winter.

Yes- I love daffodils.
