acceptance

It's been a while since I've blogged.
My niece told me once she could tell when life was hard for me because- I stop blogging. She hit that right on the button!
Yes, life has thrown a curve ball our way, but it's okay now.
Acceptance- I've been working on acceptance. I think I'm almost there now?
Truth be told- I'm not there at all- but yes-- I'm working on it.
Here I am writing about it, that's a good sign, right?
A couple of weeks ago my favorite 12 year old was diagnosed with developing Tourettes.
Trent- man o' man I love this kid.
ADHD, Aspergers, Anxiety disorder, OCD, and now developing Tourettes Syndrome.
Okay, okay... I knew he had it- sure I did. I'm his mother I could see the beginnings. I had read up & I knew it was a possibility.

***
Some background- Several months ago I talked to another mom (hi Becky) about her son's OCD. She had told me all about a specialist at the University of Utah - how he was such a great doctor who had helped them tremendously. I had this pressing feeling we needed to see him too. I let it go- but the feeling kept coming back. Finally, the week school got out I called- got the paper work (like 20 pages to fill out!), sent it in & got on the "list" to be seen. Then- it happened- we had our first appointment 10 weeks later. It was absolutely apparent by this time- there was more going on with Trent than months ago when my friend & I had talked. Big changes. Jerking movements- obsessive quick whistles, unusual comments- We talked through all of this with the specialist- Brett & I & Trent.
It felt like we were there with the specialist JUST IN TIME.

***
Some interesting facts about Tourettes:
*10% of Asperger kids develop Tourettes- 80% of those grown out of it.
*Tourettes is not officially diagnosed until it has been a full year (even if they patient shows all signs)
*Although there are a lot of common tics- not all tics are the same. Only 10% of people who have Tourettes swear as their tic.
*Tourettes peaks in early adolescence between 10-13. It is usually controlled or gone by 18, although many adults experience tics into adult hood- they are at their peak earlier. (You know, teens don't have enough going on in their changing bodies!!)

***

Someone said to me recently- "My life feels so hard, then I think of you & my life isn't that hard!" What the heck-I had no idea what she was talking about?

Her words have been ringing threw my head.

I have spent the last couple of days feeling sorry for my boy, for myself. Feeling angry. Then feeling humble- Then feeling blessed. Then feeling sorry again- repeat.

I've met with his teachers now - he started some anxiety RX (it could reduce tics 30%-50%) - we have adjusted his IEP. I've talked to the parents of the boys his age in the neighborhood... most of them

The good news:

Because of a recent change in the legislature (I think?- I didn't really hear the real reason I was so excited!) Trent's class was changed from 34 students to 22. (34 students- IMPOSSIBle for anyone to learn!) A new teacher was hired- the class lists were adjusted. The boy... one boy who bullies him at times- is not in his class. His new teacher, who is fantastic by the way, told me the janitor came in & took 12 desks out of her room! It feels personal- a miracle really. A personal miracle - now my boy has a chance of having a GREAT school year.

**

We are tried, We are blessed.

I know He has a plan for me & for T. For all of us!

I don't know why? I know it's not "my fault." Yes I've struggled with that one.

I am learning

acceptance-

acceptance is the first step in thriving, succeeding, overcoming & achieving.

for me anyway.

look who's getting SO BIG!

JOEY

I can hardly believe how big he has gotten... I miss him so much. I can't really think too much about it or I start to... you know... get all teary & cry. It's okay, it's okay- I tell myself. They are in a good place. Tony has a good job & they have a lovely home- in this economy that is saying a lot right? They are all happy & healthy & we shall see them again around the time Elder Messer gets home- or soon after. sigh

a deacon

This past weekend my baby boy... was ordained a deacon in our church. I can hardly believe it!? It was a big/great day. It was so fun to see him with the big boys, next week he will even pass the sacrament! He was really excited. We had a lot of company come to help us celebrate Trent! My mom & dad were here!

Grandma played at least 5 games of Sorry with Trent. I'm not sure who was winning/cheating or what, but they were having fun.

After church we had a BBQ- good ol' hamburgers & hot dogs. Trent wanted everyone to make their own pizzas--- but we had pizza on his birthday-- can you imagine that many people making pizzas with one oven? blah-

Marcus, Brittany & Johnny had flown in just in time from Disney World!

This picture was taken just a couple of hours before The Peanut... broke his leg jumping on our trampoline. So not good. Poor little guy. Cried & cried & then had to go to instacare... now getting a cast... oh I feel awful about it!

thanks for coming mom & dad-

It was great to have you here for us & for Trent's special day!

11 under 7

Thursday night we had a real treat

My oldest sister Debbie's three girls came to visit.

I grew up babysitting these guys & now they are all mothers!

they have 10 kids under 7 between them- wow (Ruthie came too with the peanut- so that made it 11 under 7!)

It was absolutely wonderful to have them here

My niece Wendy shares a birthday with Trent so we had to celebrate, of course!

We had make your own taco salads & the kids all played in the back yard- beautifully.

I had loads of chocolate chip cookies made ahead of time.

They loved swinging on our tree swings.

Swinging- I love this shot- it looks like he's going to hit my camera.

the kids loved exploring Chloe's garden & Trent's tree house.

Brian & Chloe put up our trampoline the day before to add to the fun. we don't like to keep it up all summer because it kills our grass.

the kids loved to see pictures of themselves jumping off the deck onto the tramp.

Guess what? A miracle occurred... no one got hurt!

there was side walk chalk.

and babies- this is the youngest.

Some of the kids were already in car seats when I decided to take group pictures...

It didn't dawn on my once to take a picture of my nieces all together. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED I MISSED MY CHANCE. when will I ever learn?

What a blessing it was to have them all come to my home- I love these girls & their beautiful families. Too bad we live so far away, but then that's what Heaven is for-- visiting all the people you love, when ever you want!

twelve is good

Last night we had a little- very little- family party. Sunday when Trent is ordained a Deacon we are having a big family party. Brian & Laura were here & Chloe, Brett & I- Hailey is away at EFY. Ethan came last minute- Trent & he had been swimming (thanks again WEnde) all day.
There was Little Caesar's Pizza, Bread sticks, Root beer, Chocolate cake & Vanilla Ice Cream. Does dinner get better than this? In my opinion- Heavens YES- apparently not when you're 12.

Trent got a new BYU tie from his very strong U fan, Sunday school teacher- and a pocket knife from his new scout master! Trent is truly loved in the neighborhood.

He also got some new things for school & a Cars 2 - Nintendo DS game. Even a really great email from missionary Jack. The highlight of the night was the model helicopter Wende & Ethan gave him. He put it together & slept with it last night. Cute.

I can't believe my baby's 12.

but I wouldn't have it any other way!

p.s. Trent got 3 birthday cards in the mail today!

You GuYs ROCk!!

12

Last night when Trent went to bed he was 11. This morning he woke up -- 12. I'm not sure he could be more excited?Dad left for work... then- there was a loud knock at the door & WA La- a bike was there!
Trent's birthday wish had come true!
He immediately took it for a spin around the cola sac & nearly got hit by a neighbor pulling out of the driveway... oh boy.

never a dull moment

This boy is so easy to love.

He is special in so many ways.

Yesterday we took him to a new doctor- a specialist at the U of U. It was amazing. In our two hour evaluation we learned so much more about Trent. About Aspergers, the adolescent brain, ADHD, turrets & tics, OCD, and what we need to do to keep on helping our guy. He is doing great & that's the way we want to keep it.

12 year old Trent loves:

cheese pizza - cake - riding bikes - scouts - playing with friends - doing hard 1000 piece puzzles- Lego's - hugs - technology & computers - his big brothers & sisters - and getting birthday cards in the mail... so far he has been extremely disappointed by getting none. (He checks EVErY DAY. If you know him please send him one!!!)

What I love about Trent: He is very honest & literal (which is great for a mom & sometimes funny) he loves to hug me, he is a great whistler, he is a good brother, he helps me with the computer & hooking up the dvd player etc.

I love you Trent!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
