oh baby

Chloe & Caroline are taking child development this year.
For extra credit they brought home the dreaded... mechanical babies.
For the whole weekend- aaaah!!

They have been good sports about it. I think they are both really, really tired. Those babies don't sleep well at night. They have micro chips inside of them. The teacher can download the chip & find out every. single. thing. & she'll know if the baby is ignored or if something doesn't go just right. (Even if the baby's neck falls back too far.) There are bottles, diapers, burping to be done. Being a mom-- even a mom to a mechanical child-- it's a tough 24/7 job.

 NOw...
Somebody is obsessed & wants a mechanical baby doll too....
you know, so he can practice being a dad.
Yesterday he asked me if in High School he could take auto shop & child development.
Sure! In fact if you ask me-- child development should be a requirement.

jinxed

I may have jinxed myself with all my work enthusiasm in my last post.
today was...... miserable.
tired me + crabby shoppers + demonstrating prime rib + long hours = a headache

To make matters worse---
I saw a young mom with three young daughters. Three daughters with bows in their hair.
I got all teary & had to walk into the back room for a second.
Oh how I LOved to do my girls hair... sigh.

Somedays I just miss being a mom at home with my kids.
Little kids- it was so hard, but so fun at the same time.
Why did it go so fast? Why didn't I do more, enjoy it more, I still have some time right?

It was just a hard day.

very exciting work day

Wednesday I was at work... just a workin' along. Demo-ing a french finishing sauce (piccata) over chicken & rice and... working at the cash counter.
WHEN LOW & BEHOLD
 I LOOKED UP
and there she was!!!

THE KELSEY NIXON from the Cooking Channel. THE KELSEY NIXON from Kelsey's Essentials. THE KELSEY NIXON that my girls & I ADORE, tape her shows, protect them on our DVR so we can watch them over & over (and we do!), THE KELSEY NIXON that Megan introduced me to on her adorable blog (she has the coolest wedding video.)
Ya- I was just a little excited.
I walked right up
without even hesitating
said:
are you KELSEY?
she said
yes
I started gushing.
I'm pretty sure I embarrassed myself... and my co-workers... ya-- pretty positive. She was so kind to offer to take a picture with me. My IPhone was in the back- the store was really busy- she did write a little note for Chloe though. NOW-- I WANT TO DIE-- because I am so stupid!!! I should have gone & got my phone & taken the picture!!!!!!! dang it.
She was just as adorable in person as on TV. SUPER nice about my gushing... and so sweet to write a sincere note to Chloe.
She says her new season starts in January & she should have a cookbook out soon!
REally excited- but really wish I could have a signed cookbook. Did you know I LOVE signed cook books- and collect (well, I'm working on it) them? I DO!!
WEll- except for NOT TAKING A PICTURE & SOUNDING LIKE AN IDIOT... it was a pretty, darn, good, work day.

sweet cheeks

Look who came to my house last night!!
It was pretty sweet. This fellow is cutting SIX teeth & has been pretty crabby... nothing some peek a boo & ripping up paper couldn't fix. We had a great time & the word is- that he fussed a bit when I left the room!? ya- there's pretty much nothing better in the whole wide world than a baby. Especially a cutie who smiles & giggles as much as Johnny. Love this kid.

a tale of two parties

It was a party filled weekend!

Saturday night was the blogger mom's Christmas dinner... I brought this cake.
It was so fun to make, but didn't taste that great-- it was just okay. Maybe I was just so full by the time dessert rolled around? We had the most delicious chicken, ham, potatoes... loads of appetizers, salad... Anyhow- it's a 5 layer cake. Three vanilla cake layers with two peppermint cheesecake layers in between. The frosting is whipped cream & white chocolate. It is also quite droopy--- thanks to Trent ramming into it on the way into Wende's house. That just about put me over the edge- geesh!

Friday night~ was our ward Christmas party/dinner.
It was so, so fun! For real the funnest Christmas party ever.
We brought "alms" for the poor (food bank donations) then received money for the Bethlehem bistro. We dressed up & the kids sang songs. The Nativity was reenacted. We traded our money (bags of pennies for food & sat on the floor on blankets to eat & socialize. It was awesome.

Sunday we ate dinner with Brittany, Brittany, Marcus & Johnny- I forgot to take pictures... bummer.
Great weekend.
I've gotta admit- I am loving this Christmas season- and feel so blessed to have so many friends & family to share it with.

5 minutes

I only have 5 minutes before I have to leave.

2. man I hate those.
3. it's cold here
4. but I still put my make up on with a fan pointed at me.
5. I'm always HOT
6. glad the wind is gone
7. I bought & wrapped so many presents yesterday!!! woo hooo!
8. Double woo- hoo-- because so far I have stayed (strongly) in the Christmas budget.
9. Knowing I have work keeps me busy getting things done.
10. Have a GREAT day!

11. what do YOU want for Christmas?
12. soon I will make my Christmas favorite list!!!!

Last week we went to our ward's
 Relief Society Christmas dinner.
In our congregation the YW are always invited to all R.S. activities (oh how I LOVE this- for so many reasons.) It was so much fun - and the perfect way to get into the Christmas Spirit.

The decorations were adorable, the food was delightful, the program was perfect, we sang lots of Christmas carols-- I loved it.
Plus Hailey performed the song, "Mary Did You Know?"
It was great.

This week we have two more Christmas parties- wow!
Maybe it's because the decorations are up & most of my packages & cards are sent?
But, I am really loving this Christmas season?
Whatever it is - I'll take it!

amazing community!

Today is Stake Conference (a multiple congregation meeting) but it was canceled. Everyone is out in the neighborhood cleaning up debris. Men & women with trailers & trucks are filling them up. Trees that weren't cleaned up yesterday are being cleaned up today. They came & took away our busted up fence & we picked up all the garbage etc. from the yard.

There is a 70% chance of snow & 100% chance of
more wind
nope not kiddin'

This time it shouldn't be as bad as last time- just gust up to 70 MPH.
Shoot- that's just baby stuff!

The kids are hoping & praying for school to be canceled again!
I'm just emailing the missionary & trying to get the laundry caught up in case the power goes out again. Priorities people!
Plus... I'm getting packages ready to send out for Christmas. Nearly all of our family live in different states. If I can get them all put together I'm headed to the post office first thing in the morning. Just think- with a wind storm swirling around-- there shouldn't be any lines?
I know, I'm really thinking ahead! Heck, I'm brilliant!

blown away

It's been a very hectic, crazy, scary & long couple of days.
The wind came for a visit.
East wind- came to my town & blew hard. Gusts up to 102 MPH to be exact.
It started early Thursday morning around 2:00 AM. I was awake... so I know. Around 3:30 AM Trent woke up & we went downstairs- hoping not to wake up Brett. The power was out- and we landed on the couches. We didn't sleep much... and around 5:30 the power was back on & we turned on the news. Semi trucks were knocked over on the freeway, trees were down all over town. The weather man said if you live in our town- do not send your kids to school no matter what! School had not been canceled. Soon after that the power was out again & we all were up.

Brian & Laura came here- they have single pane windows & were worried.

Our fence blew down.
We watched the roots of the tree just behind our house- rocking almost out of the ground back & forth. Brett ran to Home Depot- bought 100 feet of rope. He & Brian tied it to the tree, then to another tree & anchored it. It wouldn't have hit the house- but would have crashed threw the deck.

(I finally cleaned up all the Thanksgiving decorations in my warm hoody)
It got cold. Really cold- 15 degrees with the wind chill outside & 50's inside. Brett was out & about helping neighbors & checking on people. Chloe & Hailey were at the Johnson's-- their house was slammed!!
You can see past the car there- the tree roots coming up threw the driveway! Below: two more trees down- one went through Carolines bedroom wall. They had windows blown out too.

We ate dinner at WEnde's house - their power was back mid day.
School was canceled- finally- and for today too- no power!
WE all slept in the family room with the gas fireplace on. It was cold- but around 1-2:00 AM came on. It was quite an adventure. We are truly blessed. There are still people tonight without power- we just hope ours stays on for the night!? All & all we are blessed- and remembering that truly things are just that-- things. Family, friends, the gospel- our relationships. Those are truly the important things in life.

thankful for my missionary

Last week I got my usual Monday email from missionary Jack.
It was unusual- it was special. I had a hard time reading it through my tears.
Missionaries frequently go through experiences they deem inappropriate (too scary) to tell their mothers- and this email included one of those stories.
I would like to share this story today- as inspiration. It has inspired me. I have trials- just like everyone else. The really hard ones I don't share on this blog. This trial of my son Jack- was a great reminder that it's through trials that we learn the most- something I too easily forget.

My mission has taught me a lot about gratitude and about being thankful. I have learned how much the Lord has given to me. I am going to share a story today that I didn't send last year. I figured it is one of those stories that is much more interesting & better told after it is over. A year ago today, the Monday before thanksgiving, I was packing up my suit cases because I was being transferred from Gurgui. I was transferred to Jatuica right down by the Beach in Maceio. However I was starting to get sick. Now I won't lie in this email, I had been sick fro months with worms & figured the little guys were probably just doing a little bit of rough housing. My companion and I were opening the area so, feeling well or not, we had to go out & work to get to know the area. My health went quickly form bad to worse. I started having paralyzing head aches & by the time we got to the house at night I would walk in , fall on my bed in my clothes, and wouldn't move until morning. Wednesday I ate little at lunch, not being able to stomach much. By Wednesday night I had thrown up everything and was starting to get really, really sick.
We we arrive on thanksgiving 2010. I spent the day lying on my bed soaking threw the sheets with sweat. I had Dengue Fever. I knew I had it. My trainer had told me if you are ever lying on your bed, so sick you think you are going to die, you will know. Those words turned out to be prophetic. I passed the whole day reading until the head ache became too bad, then I would start listing off all the things I was thankful for. It being Thanksgiving, I couldn't let the day pass without a grateful attitude. I couldn't eat. I would sit up & drink a mouth full of water & then lay down & use all the determination in my body to not throw it up, failing many times. I called my mission President's wife but she too thought maybe it was just rowdy worms. There is not much you can do for Dengue Fever after all. Well, the next day turned out to be 'Ground Hog Day' (he is making reference to the movie- one of our family favorites) I went through the same process. Reading a little, drinking a sip of water, lying back down, and trying not to throw up, and the list of blessing continued. I woulds start the list over from the beginning and then try to add a handful of new things every time. After 48 hours, seeing as I couldn't sleep much with the frequent bathroom visits, my list really started to grow.
Saturday came & after 72 hours without food and with about a half-liter of water I started to get worried. Sister Beynon (the mission president's wife) finally told me to go to the emergency room at about lunch time. I arrived there & when I finally was attended to they took me into a back room to hook me up to an IV. I passed out on the way to the bed waking up when the first bag from the IV ran out. I stayed there all day, but had finally reached the exhausted point & kept sleeping. The doctor came in that night & told me I was good to go, though I didn't feel that way. After arguing with him for a while he told me there was nothing more they could do. I left & called Sister Beynon. I remember sitting in that lobby, putting my face in my hands & feeling like it was over. I wasn't going to make it. I threw up in the emergency room bathroom on the way out and we headed home. I walked into our house, and went straight to my bed. My knees hit the ground & I said one of the quickest but most sincere prayers I ever had. I said I was grateful for my list. I said I was grateful that my list of blessings had kept me going. I said I sure hoped to wake up alright in the morning. I closed my prayer & rolled into bed.
I woke up that night. It was about three in the morning. I threw up all the liquid they had pumped me full of but then I just felt so hungry. I had gone well over 80 hours without any food. What happened next was one of the most interesting experiences in my mission. I heard the spirit say  'go to the table, You will find an apple there.' I made my way to the table & sure enough found in the darkness an apple. I went out on our porch and sat in my favorite part in that house where you can look up at the sky and the wind is always strong. That apple is the best thing I have eaten in my whole life. I can still remember the taste. It was the sweetest most delicious thing I had ever eaten. It was as if I had picked the fruit right off the tree of life. I sat there & I went over my list of things that I was grateful for. I realized then & there that I still hadn't finished my list. The lord had blessed me so abundantly that I couldn't finish my list even after days. I remember feeling a deeper sense of gratitude come upon me.... That week was one of the most important weeks in my mission. It was one of the weeks that I learned the most. It was the best lesson on gratitude that I have ever received as I laid on my bed on Thanksgiving making a list of all that I was grateful for. That week has had a powerful impact on my whole mission. Since that moment I have felt many times that I could not keep going. I was tired or sick or frustrated. However, I have always remembered that the lord stayed with me that whole week. He supports me. He knows what we go through . When we stop to count our blessings we can make it through any difficult circumstance.

Let me just say that he is well now. These pictures are proof of that!
